Starting the Lego Car

 Alright, so this is week 1 progress of the Lego Car. I can't say I have spent a significant amount of time on this project as of yet, but I did begin some work on the modular components.

The pieces I did start on were the traditional bricks



These include:

1x1

1x2

1x3

1x4

2x2

2x4

I need to double check, but I believe these are all the traditional sized bricks that will be used in this model. If I have missed one, it would most likely be a 2x3, but it would not be particularly difficult to make.



Seeing the wireframe overload onto the models, you can see that there's a decent amount of edge loops. These were put in to help alight objects like the center stud, and keep the bricks form when smoothed. That being said, I do think some of them are excessive, maybe even a solid 1/3. But if I want to reduce geometry later on, it it will be easy to do so, as these are all complete loops.




As you can see in the true wireframe, there are no additional faces within the actual models. All of which were built from the original 1x1. On some, 2 sides of faces would need to be deleted, on others, just one.

Here's how the models look like after being smoothed.



At this stage they look a lot more like traditional Legos. My only concern is that the edges of the bricks might be too rounded. I might add more edge loops to resolve this issue.

You can see in the wireframe though that there still is a ample amount of edge loops near the corner



They are just spaced a bit too far from the actual corner, so I think by moving them in a bit more, I can fix this problem.

Lastly here's the true wireframe of the smoothed models:



The major difference I noted relative to the unsmoothed model, was the studs at the top. They are notably rounder, the edges though are mostly unaffected.

Overall I thought the progress I made was significant in the short time I had worked on the project. What was far more valuable was the experience and practice I gained. These bricks are flawed, and need to be redone in my opinion. My second iteration will be far higher quality.



The primary reason I need to redo them is because they are modular in design, and cloned off a singular object. Meaning they also inherited the issues of the starter model.


The next version of these bricks with hard a lot less edge loops in them, as well as not having rounded corners. After that, I'll work on the interior of the 1x1 stud, before cloning it to create the larger bricks.

Car Week 3 Progress

  The 3rd week has concluded for the car project, and I and happy with the progress I have made. There has been some rather significant changes in the model, including the workflow regarding it, and the reference itself.  I have been given permission to change the Countach from the LP400 model, to that of the LP500. The primary changes between these two models, is the removal of the roof engine mounted intakes. Where the side meets the undercarriage is less pronounce, as well as the the actual frame of the vehicle being more square like. Basically, its a more bare boney version, relative to the LP400 After removing the air intakes, I spent time fixing the geometry around that area so it worked smoother with the rest of the body. These changes might all sound minor, but they have major impacts on the overall design of the vehicle, and the future details I will be adding to it. Car Week 2 Progress

 The majority of this week I spent improving the general mesh of the car. Specifically getting the mesh to be less blocky. I did not add to many edge loops to the build, as I wanted to keep it lower to more easily manipulate the car, but more importantly be able to easily cut out sections like the hood and bumpers later on. I also added a backplate behind the wheels. The underside of the car wont be modeled, but this portion of the bottom can be seen from the sides. This will be made a bit nicer in the future, but it was primarily needed now as to clearly indicate that there is portions of the model their, that aren't part of the cars main body. I added some minor extrusions and edge loops to the part of the body that meets the tire frame. This was so that the frame remains intact after smoothing and subdividing the car. Dagger

 This project went a lot smoother then the sink model I had made previously. I'm also far more confident that there are no Ngons. Unfortunately there were 5 present in my sink model, but I like to think I have gotten far better at catching and eliminating them. One think I know I still don't have the hang of, is Marmoset. I feel as the texturing quality, along with inhouse rendering that I am producing in Toolbag is easily less then the quarter of the level I do in Substance Painter. That being said, from my understanding Toolbag is more capable, so its worth while to attempt to learn it. It also renders far faster then Iray, but in terms of the actual quality of the final shot, its significantly lacking, but I believe that's due to the fact that I don't understand how to effectively use the software and all its settings.
