Car Week 2 Progress

The majority of this week I spent improving the general mesh of the car. Specifically getting the mesh to be less blocky. I did not add to many edge loops to the build, as I wanted to keep it lower to more easily manipulate the car, but more importantly be able to easily cut out sections like the hood and bumpers later on.

I also added a backplate behind the wheels. The underside of the car wont be modeled, but this portion of the bottom can be seen from the sides. This will be made a bit nicer in the future, but it was primarily needed now as to clearly indicate that there is portions of the model their, that aren't part of the cars main body.

I added some minor extrusions and edge loops to the part of the body that meets the tire frame. This was so that the frame remains intact after smoothing and subdividing the car. This was also done where the side of the cockpit meets the lower body, as well as where the window frames meet the roof. Speaking of windows, they have been removed from the model. I was told it would be easier to add them as separate components later on, and we could my geometry more organized.

In terms of big noticeable differences, the engine in takes near the back of the car have been made more accurate:

They are still the highest portion of the car, but their geometry has been shifted to better conform to the design of the actual vehicle. In my first review, I don't believe I had gotten to the point of using the front camera to conform the intakes, so they were extending far more outward then they should of, as well as being too high in some areas. You can see the sides being notable slimmer from a top down view:

What's visible in this photo, as well as the one above, is the additional edge loops that run from the top to bottom, as well as a few new ones that go side to side, primarily around the hood of the car.

Some of these edge loops don't do much in the normal view of the model, but once smoothed they help retain important shapes. Here you can see how the latest version of the car looks like, without any affects:

If we look at the same spot where the hood meets the windshield while the model is smoothed, you can see that the arears are more clearly defined:

This wraps of the majority of the progress and overall changes I have made this week, and I am confident I am on track to finishing this model on time, and at a significant level of quality.

Next week I should be adding finer details, as well as separating and modeling individual components of the car. Such as: side air intakes, primary air intakes, side mirrors, headlights, taillights, blinkers, break lights, rear and front bumpers, hood, windows, and the engine exhausts.
